GILDA'S CLUB NEW YORK CITY provides
meeting places where men, women and children living with cancer –
and
their families and friends – can join together to build social and
emotional support as a supplement to medical care. GCNYC offers
support and networking groups, workshops, lectures and social events in a
beautiful, homelike setting. All of our programs are offered
free of charge. It costs
approximately $500 a year to provide each member with our program of
support. Your support is crucial in helping us to ensure that no one
has to face cancer alone. |

Another Hot Event hosted by The Concerned Women of Cherry Grove
On Saturday, August 9, 2008 The Concerned Women of Cherry Grove (CWOG) held their 13th Annual Breast Cancer Benefit on Fire Island, raising funds for Gilda's Club New York City (GCNYC) and the Stony Brook Center for Breast Cancer Research. Over 400 attendees helped raise more than $24,000 for GCNYC while having a wonderful time soaking up the rays, dancing, eating delicious homemade food and bidding on fabulous auction items. Benefit organizers asked GCNYC Program Director Migdalia Torres to speak at the event and she shared with the group how we offer emotional and social support to men, women and children with any type of cancer and their family and friends. Migdalia thanked CWOG for their ongoing support and how important it is to keep the program free of charge for our members. |

Volunteer Profile: Jonathan
Pearlroth
Jonathan Pearlroth has been a GCNYC volunteer since 1995, for
nearly as long as our red door has been open.
Being a cancer survivor, and familiar with Gilda Radner's story, he walked
in off the street and introduced himself to the social workers on staff,
and asked how he could help.
"Helping someone else is sort of essential to my own spiritual
well-being," he explains.
"What's the point of getting sick if you can't help somebody with it?"
Ten years earlier, while finishing law school, Jonathan had been
diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
He responded well to treatment initially, but a year later suffered a very
serious relapse, from which it took much longer to recover.
During this time, there was no resource or community to help him learn to
live with the emotional impact of his diagnosis and treatment.
"Inside, I was incredibly angry to be 25 years old and have cancer.
I was very alone and very sad."
The memory of this experience, along with his desire to give back to
the community, led Jonathan to Gilda's Club New York City, where he was
quickly put to work facilitating New Member Meetings.
Jonathan provides new members with an orientation to the Gilda's Club
community.
At Gilda's Club, our members are our experts, who through their shared
wisdom help each other learn to live with cancer.
Jonathan brings life to this philosophy from the first moment new members
arrive by telling his own story.
New members share their stories in turn, often realizing for the first
time that they won't have to face cancer alone.
The experience has been rewarding enough to keep
Jonathan coming back every week for thirteen years: "I've gotten so much
out of it, being able to participate in people's lives at such a difficult
and intimate time.
It's the most valuable thing I do with my life, without a doubt, other
than being at home with my kids." |

Damone and his "Brow Divas" treated all members who attended to a complimentary eyebrow sculpting. Damone generously provided each member with eyebrow products from his exclusive line so that they would be able to recreate their personalized looks. Members enjoyed watching beauty technique demonstrations and had a wonderful time socializing in the luxurious setting of Damone's posh salon. |
