Rose and Eric

"When diagnosed with cancer you don't know what to expect. Life changes completely. You go through a lot emotionally and physically and you can feel very alone. At Gilda's Club you get support from others like you, who are going through similar things. I can express how I feel and get feedback from the others in my group. Gilda's Club prepared me for what was coming ... and now post-treatment, I can see the other side of cancer."

Rose, Gilda's Club Member

Rose, a single mom with two children, was diagnosed in 2011 with stage-2 breast cancer. A month preceding the diagnosis, she had undergone a simple medical procedure which went terribly wrong and left her with a permanent tracheotomy. This complicated and postponed her breast surgery and treatment. During the wait, Rose knew she was going to need some sort of support for herself as well as her children, in particular, Eric, her quiet and reserved 11-year old boy.

Rose's oncology nurse had recommended a few organizations for her to research and upon doing so, Rose chose Gilda's Club for its weekly support group and close proximity to her home the Bronx. Rose began her weekly support group at the Gilda Comes to You Montefiore offsite program. She soon found that the others in the group prepared her for what was to come: how she would feel from chemo, different ways she can handle it, how important it was to take notes, and to ask questions. She felt calmer and prepared going into surgery and beginning the long road of treatment.

Eric began attending Noogieland, GCNYC's program for children ages 4-12, at the Manhattan Clubhouse while Rose attended workshops that focused on reducing stress and helping her learn to take care of herself. The trip downtown took 1 hour and 45 minutes each way but Rose and Eric both felt it was worth it.

Through Rose's treatment, she continued with her support group when she was able and credits the others in the group for giving her the strength to keep going and eventually attend her daughter's high school graduation.
